:Apnea refers to the process of stopping breathing while one is asleep. The results of apnea include falling asleep during the day, feeling constantly tired due to poor-quality sleep, and even death if the apnea is severe enough. Poor-quality sleep leads to another potentially deadly danger, that of falling asleep at the wheel or being tired enough to be an impaired driver. There are a number of causes of apnea; snoring is one. When a person sleeps on his back, the soft palette at the back of his mouth partially closes off the air way. The noise of snoring occurs as the back part of the mouth vibrates as air is passing through. Imagine an oboe or bassoon reed: these reeds vibrate because the two parts are close together and air goes through them. The same is true for the back part of the mouth and throat. There are several ways to treat snoring apnea. One is for the person to sleep on his side instead of his back. Being overweight can contribute to
snoring apnea, so losing weight may help. There are various approaches to opening the back of the mouth in order to increase the air flow such as mouth guards made by dentists or the use of a CPAP machine that forces air into the mouth. Snoring is not just annoying for the snorer’s partner, but it can also be dangerous since it reduces the amount of air available and it reduces the quality of sleep. It is important to get snoring treated and to try different treatment options until one works.
